Adaptive environments for wellbeing

How Arqaios prevents falls for older adults—without cameras or wearables

A fall is never “just a fall.” It can erase confidence, limit independence, and trigger a cascade of health complications. At Arqaios, we believe the built environment should actively protect the people who live in it. That’s why we’re creating adaptive homes and care settings that reduce fall risk proactively, and do it without cameras or wearables.

Below, we share the practical steps our platform takes to prevent falls while preserving dignity and privacy.

1) Night-safe lighting that thinks ahead

Most falls happen during routine moments, like getting up at night. Arqaios softly illuminates a path the instant our system senses someone is getting out of bed:

  • Automatic, low-glare glow from outlets, switches, and fixtures guides the way to the bathroom.
  • Adaptive brightness adjusts to the time of night and ambient light so eyes aren’t dazzled.
  • Smart pathing keeps lights local (bedroom → hall → bathroom) and powers down calmly once the person is safely back in bed.

The result: visibility where it matters, exactly when it’s needed, no voice commands, apps, or taps.

2) Continuous gait trends, quietly measured in the background

Fall risk changes over time. Arqaios continuously and passively tracks gait quality, such as:

  • Walking speed and cadence
  • Stride variability and asymmetry
  • Turn duration and hesitation

Because our sensing is non-contact and privacy-preserving, there’s nothing to wear, charge, or remember. When the system detects a meaningful change from a person’s baseline, it notifies caregivers so they can review trends and plan interventions, like PT consults, footwear changes, or layout tweaks, before a fall happens.

3) “Help me up” alerts for those who shouldn’t ambulate alone

For residents who need assistance to get up (post-surgery, high fall risk, memory care), Arqaios recognizes attempted bed or chair exits and immediately alerts caregivers or nursing staff:

  • Real-time notifications to mobile devices, nurse stations, or existing call systems
  • Escalation rules if no one acknowledges within a set window
  • Optional in-room voice prompts (“Help is on the way. Please wait a moment.”) to reduce impulsive standing

This balances safety with autonomy, and dramatically shortens the window between risk and response.

4) Proactive environment adjustments that reduce hazards

Beyond alerts, Arqaios changes the environment to make movement safer:

  • Lights auto-brighten along a route; others dim to avoid glare.
  • Smart vents can temper a chilly hallway that encourages rush-walking.
  • Contextual suggestions nudge caregivers to relocate throw rugs, lamps, or furniture when our system notices patterns (e.g., repeated toe stubs at the same spot).

Small changes add up to major risk reduction.

5) Privacy by design: no cameras, no wearables

Dignity matters. Arqaios uses privacy-preserving, ambient sensors (such as non-imaging radar and related modalities) embedded in everyday fixtures, power outlets, switches, vents, to understand presence, posture, and motion.

  • No cameras means no images are captured.
  • No wearables means no compliance burden.
  • On-device processing and data minimization keep sensitive information protected.

The home shouldn’t feel like a surveillance system. With Arqaios, it doesn’t.

6) Care team workflows that actually fit the day

Technology only helps if it reduces workload. Arqaios provides:

  • Clear, ranked alerts with context (who, where, what changed)
  • One-tap acknowledgments and hand-offs between staff
  • Resident-level insights for care planning meetings, gait trends, times of day with more risk, heat maps of tricky transitions

This replaces guesswork with actionable, shared situational awareness.

7) Seamless fit with the space you already have

Because our intelligence lives inside smart fixtures (outlets, switches, vents), deployment is discreet and incremental:

  • Room-by-room rollout, start with bedrooms and bathrooms
  • Works with existing lighting/HVAC, no rewiring maze
  • Operates during power glitches thanks to built-in backup in key devices

Residents keep living their lives; your environment quietly gets smarter.

Why this approach is different

Most solutions ask older adults to wear something or accept cameras in private spaces. Arqaios does neither. To our knowledge, we’re the only company developing a comprehensive fall-prevention platform that combines ambient, camera-free sensing, gait trend analysis, instant caregiver alerts, and automatic environmental adjustments, all integrated into everyday fixtures.

This isn’t just fall detection after the fact. It’s fall prevention, woven into the fabric of the home.

What success looks like

  • Fewer nighttime mishaps thanks to anticipatory lighting
  • Earlier interventions when gait begins to change
  • Faster responses when high-risk residents attempt to stand
  • Less alarm fatigue, more meaningful insights
  • Greater dignity and privacy for residents
